Introduction
Akatakyie, the famous Ghanaian music duo, is made up of two brothers, Prince Kwabena Budu Asumaning (Kobby Culture) and Ebenezer Kwasi Okyere Asumaning (King Pharoah). They shot to stardom with their first album, Odo Esisi Me, back in 1999. This album even snagged them the Best Hiplife Song award at the very first Ghana Music Awards in 2000.
After their initial success, Akatakyie went on to release a bunch of albums like Ghana Mbaa, Odo Esikyire, and Yedi Aba. These albums were full of bangers and got them nominated for more Ghana Music Awards. They’re known for sticking to their unique style and staying loyal to their record label, Sole Records. Akatakyie played a big part in shaping the hiplife genre, which mixes highlife and hip hop.
Despite their initial success, Akatakyie ran into financial troubles after Sole Records went under. In an interview with KMJ on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the duo shared that money problems kept them out of the music scene for years. They had a hard time finding support, as potential investors were hesitant to help them get back on their feet.
King Pharaoh explained that their financial issues were made worse by their dealings with Sole Records. Despite being loyal and not having a formal contract, the label didn’t give them the support they needed. Kobby Culture mentioned that the label had potential but lacked good management, which ultimately led to their downfall. They had to handle everything on their own, which was tough.
Nowadays, Akatakyie is making a comeback by performing with live bands at different events like weddings and birthday parties. They also pop up on radio talk shows to stay connected with their fans and the music scene. Despite their past struggles, Akatakyie is still a beloved name in Ghanaian music.
